The Atlantic City Convention Center is greening up the New Jersey coast. In January, the center completed its 2.36-megawatt rooftop solar power system, which covers about 300,000 square feet with its network of over 13,000 panels. The Atlantic City Convention & Visitors Authority unveiled plans for the solar array in June, announcing it had awarded Pepco Energy Services a 20-year power purchase agreement to install, operate and maintain the array at the center. The installment is the largest single roof-mounted solar array in the country.
The Atlantic City Convention Center expects to save nearly $4.4 million in electricity costs over the next 20 years. The panels will avoid the release of over 2,000 tons of carbon dioxide into the atmosphere, a number comparable to the electricity used by 282 homes in a year.
In the future, the convention center is researching the installation of a wind turbine to further its green initiatives. Certainly the convention center will continue to change the face of meetings and events in Atlantic City.
