Atlantic City Convention Center Goes Green

Wednesday, February 11, 2009 by Cvent Staff
Atlantic City Convention CenterThe Atlantic City Convention Center is greening up the New Jersey coast. In January, the center completed its 2.36-megawatt rooftop solar power system, which covers about 300,000 square feet with its network of over 13,000 panels.

The Atlantic City Convention & Visitors Authority unveiled plans for the solar array in June, announcing it had awarded Pepco Energy Services a 20-year power purchase agreement to install, operate and maintain the array at the center. The installment is the largest single roof-mounted solar array in the country.

The Atlantic City Convention Center expects to save nearly $4.4 million in electricity costs over the next 20 years. The panels will avoid the release of over 2,000 tons of carbon dioxide into the atmosphere, a number comparable to the electricity used by 282 homes in a year.

In the future, the convention center is researching the installation of a wind turbine to further its green initiatives. Certainly the convention center will continue to change the face of meetings and events in Atlantic City.
