Los Angeles Convention Center May Be Sold, Mayor Says

Tuesday, April 21, 2009 by Sarah Larkins
About a month ago, we blogged about the uncertain future of downtown Los Angeles. Now what lies ahead for the Los Angeles Convention Center is unclear as well.

Los Angeles Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa announced a proposed $7.05 billion city budget yesterday that relies on gaining concessions from unions and from leasing out six city-owned parking garages. He said the city was also considering leasing out parking meters and privatizing the Los Angeles Zoo and convention center.

Michael Hart at Tradeshow Week recently blogged that there could not be a worse time to do this. Though the convention center's business used to be pretty poor, it's recently seen a resurgence in bookings thanks to the opening of nearby LA Live, new restaurants, and a few hotels.

"The convention center is actually booking some serious shows and meetings during the next few years, the mayor wants to dump it," Hart blogged. "He couldn't have picked a worse time to try to unload the place."

What do you think: is it a good plan to deal with LA's $530 million budget shortfall, or a bad idea all around?

Read all of Michael's thoughts at the Tradeshow Week blog.
