Drink Trends for Your Holiday Party: Hot Cocktails

Hot CocktailRestaurants & Institutions recently reported that hot cocktails, such as mulled wine and hot toddies, are all the rage this winter. After all, with the temperatures dropping and most of in need of a pick me up this year, warm drinks are a welcome comfort.

Here are some of the recipes spotlighted by R&I. Use these tried and tested drinks at your holiday event!

Chai Hot Toddy
From Johnny Ballen, owner of the Squeaky Bean restaurant in Denver

1/2 ounce honey
1/2 ounce bourbon
1 1/2 ounce freshly brewed hot chai
1 lemon half

In a heat-proof class, add honey. Stir in bourbon and tea. Squeeze some lemon juice in glass, then top with lemon slice as garnish.

Mulled Cider
From Matt Livingston, manager of Serpas restaurant in Atlanta

4 apples
12 ounces cranberries
1 orange, halved
1/4 cup sugar
1/4 cup brown sugar
1/4 cup honey
3-4 cinnamon sticks
8 cloves
1 1-inch piece ginger, peeled and sliced
1 teaspoon allspice
4 cups water
4 cups apple cider
1 cup applejack

In a large pot, combine first 10 ingredients (through allspice.) Stir in water, apple cider and applejack and simmer over medium heat, stirring occassionally, for at least 3.5 hours. Strain. Serve in heat-proof glasses.
