New York, Hawaii Have Highest Hotel Rates in U.S.

Hotels in New York and those in Hawaii have the highest rates in the United States, according to the Hotel Price Index. The Index tracks real prices paid per hotel room, basing its numbers on those paid by customers at 68,000 hotels across 12,500 locations worldwide.

The average hotel room rate in New York was $236 per night. For Hawaii, the rate was $152 per night. Both these rates have dropped, however, from 2007 rates of $303 in New York and $176 in Hawaii.

Idaho, Nevada and South Dakota are the least expensive states to visit. Room nights in these states are $83, $80 and $74 a night, respectively.
