After five years of planning and construction, the new West Building of the Vancouver Convention Centre has opened. The expansion has tripled the size of the facility to 1.1 million square feet, or four city blocks, to offer a total of 473,523 square feet of meeting and exhibition space. The new West Building alone has 223,000 square feet of exhibit space and 60,000 square feet of meeting space.
In addition to additional space, the West Building is a stunning piece of green design. Built on land and water, it has a six-acre green roof, seawater heating and cooling, on-site water treatment, and a unique marine habitat built into the foundation. Not just good for the environment, the building is also a beautiful setting with its floor-to-ceiling glass windows overlooking the harbor and mountains in the distance.
About 20 miles from the Vancouver International Airport, the convention centre is within walking distance of 13,000 hotel rooms. The Vancouver Convention Centre is a great venue for large-scale conferences, conventions and tradeshows in Vancouver, the host of the 2010 Olympic Winter Games.
