Thinking about planning a meeting in Mexico, but worried about how safe it will be for you and your attendees? The president of Corporate Event Organizers Mexico (CEO Mexico) Jon Nedeau wants to assure you that Cancun and the Riviera Maya are as safe as they have ever been for tourists.
"The violence [in Mexico] that is being reported is very real, but it is primarily along the Mexican border with the U.S.," Nedeau writes in a March 1 email. However, "the U.S. media is guilty of painting Mexico with one broad brush...If there were major gang wars in Chicago would you not go to Florida because of it?"
Nedeau notes that though the five major drug cartels in Mexico are currently at war, fighting revolves around drug dealers, traffickers and involved authorities and is not a reflection of every area of the country.
He also notes, "Please keep in mind that Cancun has a population of 1,000,000 people and the Riviera Maya another 500,000 people and violence per capita is lower here than what you may find in Phoenix for example. Have you heard of any travel warnings to Phoenix? Thought not."
There's no question that meeting planners can find some great deals in these Mexico hotspots. Does an opinion like Nedeau's quell your fears about hosting a meeting in Mexico? If your budget's tight, it's probably worth looking into. Start by checking out the over 500 venues in Mexico on the Cvent Supplier Network.
