For more than 20 years through its Green Partnership Program, Fairmont Hotels & Resorts is already known as a leader on environmental sustainability and responsible tourism. This month, Fairmont announced a brand-wide Sustainable Design Policy, making every day Earth Day and making it simpler for planners to incorporate green best practices in event planning.

Fairmont's new policy addresses the luxury brand’s efforts to reduce operational CO2 emissions and environmental certifications for new development and renovation projections, including the widely recognized  LEED. Besides incorporating Green Rating Standards, Fairmont’s Sustainable Design Policy also includes new environmental criteria and checklists for renovation projects and property retro fits, environmental consultation during the design brief and construction processes, and creation of green build best practices repository.

With its new Sustainable Design Policy, Fairmont continues its longstanding role as an environmental and sustainable tourism champion in the hospitality industry. In addition to its award-winning environmental program, Fairmont’s efforts include sponsorship of the National Geographic Society, membership in the World Wildlife Fund (WWF), and publication of the “Green Partnership Guide,” a “going green” handbook used by other hotels and the hospitality industry.

Fairmont Hotels & Resorts has already completed its first two projects under the new policy, both meeting friendly properties. The Fairmont Pittsburgh is a new hotel that opened last year as the brand’s first LEED certified hotel. In October, The Savoy, A Fairmont Managed Hotel in London, unveiled a multi-year restoration program which included the addition of several new environmental technologies.
