Gananoque at the heart of the area is located 1-1/2 hours from Syracuse, New York, 2 hours from Ottawa, 3 hours from Montreal, and 3 hours from Toronto. The best way to see the islands is during a scenic cruises offered along the St. Lawrence River by Gananoque Boat Line.

1000 Islands has attractions to appeal to just about every interest. Groups that enjoy theatre can take in performances at the 1000 Islands Playhouse on the bank of the St. Lawrence River. 2014 productions include Driving Miss Daisy, The Importance Of Being Earnest and Waiting for the Parade. There are 7 other theatres in the area including Brockville Arts Centre, St. Lawrence Shakespeare Festival in Prescott and Upper Canada Playhouse, Morrisburg.

Attractions include Boldt Castle, the Arthur Child Heritage Museum, and the Frontenac Arch Biosphere, a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Adventure lovers can select from canoeing, kayaking, golf, cycling and, in the winter, snowmobiling and cross country skiing. Thrill seekers won't be disappointed as the area offers sky diving, motorcycling adventures and scuba diving.
