What makes an event significant?
- Is it glitz and glamour?
- Does the event have to be ground-breaking and chart a new course?
- Are showcases of new event venues, 5 star hotels, resorts and venues for conferences and business meetings of high significance?
- Is important to inspire and provide event and meeting planners with ideas for their own special and corporate events?
It's all of the above.
I've done other year-end features focusing on significant events for event planners. This year, I thought I'd take a different approach and select events that were significant in their own right but that also had personal meaning.
January: Jumeirah Zabeel Saray Opening, Dubai, United Arab Emirates
I've previously done a in-depth profile of Jumeirah Zabeel Saray. The opening is significant because it's one of the first luxury resorts to open on the Jumeirah Palm Islands in Dubai. It's an absolutely stunning property. The opening was a blockbuster event with a dazzling display of fireworks that has been come a Dubai trademark. The opening has personal significance because, although I wasn't at the opening but, a few months later I had the pleasure of using the resort for a team building retreat for one of my Middle Eastern clients. Through the new Mission Impossible movie, the world is gradually being introduced to Jumeirah Zabeel Saray.
April: Polo Heart in the City, Toronto, Canada
I've been riding for over a dozen years and volunteering at Toronto's Polo for Heart charity tournament since 1996. Not only did Polo for Heart in the City have personal meaning, it took a sporting event that usually takes place in the country to the heart of Toronto's downtown business district. Upscale retailer Holt Renfrew put on a fashion show. There was a wooden horse polo challenge and a cocktail reception. It was a unique event to kick-off the 2011 polo season in Toronto and raise funds for a worthwhile cause.
October: IMEX America, Las Vegas Nevada
IMEX America brilliantly role modeled co-location which I believe will be the wave of the future. It was a pleasure to attend a variety of receptions and pick up ideas. The Euro-zone After Party on the trade room floor was particularly creative.
December: Starhill Gallery Re-launch, Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia
In the case of the Starhill Gallery Re-launch, I was there and did get to take in some of the festivities. The launch was ground-breaking because of the way in which the Starhill Gallery used the space to create luxury event venues. Through the creative use of tents and lighting, a sidewalk was transformed into an outdoor concert venue for Julio Iglesias' performance. The Feast Village became a dramatic backdrop for a stage for the week's events. It's an inspiration for all event planners who face the challenges of creating special event venues where spaced is limited. It was the thrill of a lifetime to have a front row seat to view the fireworks from my room on the 27th floor of the JW Marriott Hotel.
There were many significant events for event planners in 2011. During 2012 we can look forward to even more events from which to draw inspiration.
