Branding Basics: The Right Name for Your Event Planning Business

One of the trickiest aspects of branding is finding the right name. 

Here are 5 important steps to take before launching your event planning business.

  1. Do your homework before selecting a name. Review options with a professional marketing consultant. Test out names that you are considering at networking events and with colleagues and friends.
    Your name is a key component of your branding. Avoid names that are already in use even if they are for other service categories or in other countries. Definitely do some brainstorming to come up with a variety of options.
  2. Before making a final selection, search Google and do a trademark search to make sure the names is not in use.
    If you select a name that is already in use, this will create brand confusion and it could cost you promotional opportunities.
    If you get it wrong, don't be afraid to re-brand and do it sooner rather than later.

    When I first launched my business, I selected a name that conveyed the fact that I wanted to take clients in "new directions." The fact that an organization providing divorce counseling was also using didn't appear to be an issue until there was confusion at networking events.
  3. Do a domain name search to ensure that the domain for the name you are considering is available on a .com domain.
  4. Before settling on a name, ensure that it is also available on Twitter, Facebook, LinkedIn, and all major social media channels. Be sure to also find out local business registration requirements and comply with them.
  5. Select a name and register it as a domain and on all social media channels.
