As event and meeting planners prepare to design and unveil events for 2015, hot technology, venue, design, decor, color, culinary, and dining trends can be a source of inspiration.
Looking ahead to 2015, here are some of the hottest trends to monitor.
2015 Technology Trends
The top two of 10 Transformative Meetings Technology Trends for 2015 forecasted by Corbin Ball are that mobile app. use for meetings will continue to grow and BLE (Bluetooth low energy) and iBeacon will provide a range of options for meetings.
Gartner Group is predicting computers everywhere from wearable systems to intelligent wall screens.
Hot Travel Trends
Smaller incentive trips for client appreciation and employee recognition are also appearing. There are requests for groups as small as 4 - 6 employees (or clients) and their spouses. Options like concierges, tour guides and local directors are some of the strategies for keeping these trips affordable.
Euromonitor and World Travel Mart identified the following travel trends:
- More affordable and authentic travel experiences
- Hot Emerging Destinations: Brazil, Nicaragua, Turkey, Oman, Botswana, South Africa, and Indonesia
Travel trends identified by Trend Hunter include customized flight websites, all business class flights, shisha service (Emirates), 3 bedroom airline cabins (Etihad), futuristic flying cabins like the BAE Systems IntelliCabin with in-seat power, more leg room, storage compartments, and LED lights.

Event, Hospitality and Travel Industry Marketing Trends
Event, travel and hospitality industry marketing is starting to parallel developments in other industries. In the U.S. and Canada, we are seeing venues and even some service provides offering Groupon-style promotions, one day sales, Black Friday specials, Small Business Saturday, Cyber Monday specials and Boxing Week Promotions. (The specials normally associated with American Thanksgiving weekend and the following week have now crossed the border and they are showing up in the industry in Canada.) There have also been some Walmart-style price rollbacks.
Hot Event Trends
Based on 5 years of research, the top two of 10 event trends for 2015 identified by Event Manager Blog were:
- unique, co-created with attendees, immersive events that engage all 5 senses
- superspeakers with strong performance skills who facilitate attendee interaction
The trends that IMEX has forecasted for 2015 include gamification, apps, and new formats like 50 minute meetings and the walking meetings that have been popular at Huffington Post.
For team building, there are fewer requests for off-site retreats and more requests for shorter sessions (1/2 day) for smaller groups (sometimes for 12 or fewer attendees). This means that providers will have to re-think their pricing structure and minimums.
