Event Venues: Haunted Houses, Castles and Places

Secret Passage, Bran Castle, RomaniaEvery culture has stories and legends about haunted places and those who haunt them. In North American, it's ghosts. Jamaica has its duppies and, in the Middle East there are tales of jinns. 

If you’re planning a Halloween event or murder mystery, complete with secret passages, dungeons, hidden chambers and spine tingling tales, haunted houses or castles are the perfect venues. 

North America

The Distillery District (Toronto)

The Distillery District is considered to be haunted because of the suicide of one of its original owners. 

Belcourt Castle (Newport, Rhode Island)

Built in Louis XIII-style in 1891, Belcourt Castle is said to be haunted: there's a suit of armor that screams, chairs that resist when someone tries to sit in them and a haunted carving of a monk.

The Caribbean

Rose Hall Great House (Jamaica)

Rosehall Great HouseFeatured on the TV series Scariest Places on Earth, Rose Hall Great House was built in the 1770s. Legend has it that it is haunted by Annee Palmer, born in England and raised in Haiti after the death of her parents by a nanny who was a voodoo priestess. After moving to Jamaica, she married John Palmer of Rose Hall Plantation. She murdered him, the 2 other men she married as well as many slave lovers. The estate fell into disrepair and truly did look haunted before it was purchased Michele Rollins nee Metrinko (Miss World USA 1963), restored and converted into a tourist attraction and event venue. Night tours are now available.

The Middle East

Bahla & Nizwa (Oman)

Haunted places include Shatti's haunted house in Nizwa. There are many tales about jinns in Bahla and Nizwa - areas that were once known for Black Magic. Over coffee one night in Nizwa, one of my clients told me about why this area is considered to be haunted.

Asia

Kuching & Kota Kinabalu (Malaysian Borneo)

A number of haunted houses have been reported in Kuching and Kota Kinabalu. Some have been profiled on the Hong Kong TV show Weird Talk.

  • Himeji Castle (Japan)
    This UNESCO World Heritage Site dates back to 1333
  • Aokigahara (Japan)
    This reputedly haunted forest is at the base of Mount Fuji.

United Kingdom

  • Tower of London
  • Edinburgh Castle (Scotland)

Europe

  • Prague Castle
  • Chateau de Chillon
  • Bran Castle - Dracula's Castle (Transylvania, Romania)
  • Frankenstein Castle (Darmstadt, Germany)
    Murder mystery dinner theater takes place at this location 40 miles from Mainz.
