Innovative igloo villages provide a unique setting for corporate groups to host events and enjoy the winter season. Here are 2 igloo villages, one in Finland that provides overnight accommodation; and the other in Japan, which is available for daytime and evening events.
Kakslauttanen Arctic Resort, Finland
Located in Finnish Lapland 250 kilometers north of the Arctic Circle, Kakslauttanen Arctic Resort made headlines 2 years with its cluster of 20 warm and cozy glass igloos in its Igloo West Village.
Through the thermal glass roofs, guests can view the spectacular Northern Lights every night. Each glass igloo has a fully adjustable bed for 2, an extra bed, and a toilet.
A separate building has separate men and ladies saunas and shower facilities. Kakslauttanen has the world's largest smoke sauna, with a capacity of 100.
This season, 4 person igloos with private shower facilities have been added. Groups can book accommodation in the glass igloos between late August and late April.
There are 4 restaurants, 2 in traditional Laplander Huts. An ice bar, ice gallery, snow chapel, and the world's largest snow restaurant with a capacity of 250, all freshly re-built each winter, round out the facilities.
Kakslauttanen Arctic Resort also has traditional snow igloos in its inventory. The temperature is maintained at a consistent -3° to -6° C. Guests sleep comfortably in hooded down sleeping bags. Even woolen socks are provided.
For group events and meetings, Santa's Celebration House, a 250 person venue with state-of-the-art audio-visual, is available. The range of activities offered includes skiing, snowmobiling, dog sledding, treks on horseback, ice fishing, cross country skiing, and, nearby, icebreaker cruises. Groups can stay connected at the resort with free WiFi available in the main building of the East Village.
Hoshino Resort Tomamu's Ice Village, Japan
From late November to late March, Hoshino Tomamu Resort's Ice Village takes shape. The beds, tables, chairs, and shelves of the Ice Houses are all made from ice. The giant igloos shaped from blocks of ice include an Ice Chapel, Ice Bar, Ice Cafe, Ice Chapel for Weddings, and an Ice School where guests can learn all about ice. There is also a warm-up cottage with hot beverages, skating rink, ice slide, snow park, and Santa's House.
Special events include fireworks displays, a Sweets Carnival in the 1st 2 weeks of February, and a Synchronized Ice Skating Show.
Please note overnight accommodation is not available at the Ice Village but it is on the same property at the Risonare Tomamu and The Tower at Hoshino Resort Tomomu.
