Incentiveworks 2012, which recently took place in Toronto, offered a Hosted Buyer Program, VIP Buyer Education Passes and WORKS Education Passes with access to educational sessions including 2 keynotes, 8 workshops, 4 breakout sessions and 2 Knowledge Pods on the trade show floor. Here are some highlights:
Knowledge Pod: In Good Taste: Event Food Trends

This session, designed to broaden event menu planning horizons. For example, Metro Toronto Convention Centre (MTCC), the Incentiveworks venue, is kicking its menus up a notch by adding seasonal ingredients procured from local farmers, more fresh vegetables and bold, multi-cultural flavors (e.g. Thai, Moroccan, Caribbean)
In another increasingly popular approach to providing fresh ingredients, MTCC now has a rooftop herb garden. Incentiveworks Hosted Buyers and VIP Buyer Education Pass holders received complimentary lunch tickets to sample healthy options like vegetarian sushi, chicken teriyaki with rice and vegetables, and vegetarian sandwiches.
Other popular trends identified included gluten-free pasta, bread and breakfast pastries, Charcuterie, deconstructed desserts, and interactive meals (e.g. pizza tosses, flambeed dishes, artisanal cheese trays and interactive stations with chef presentations).
Workshop: Ethics and Etiquette in the Business World
Facilitator: Marsha Jones, CMP, CMM, founder of MCC Planners Inc.
Prior to Incentiveworks, attendees were invited to submit their own ethical dilemmas. 4 case studies were designed from these submissions.
The RFP case study in particular rang true with many participants. Of concern were common but unethical practices of gathering information through RFPs and then booking directly with suppliers; and implementing the best ideas from non-winning bids without compensation.
Other key issues explored included Fam Trip Abuse; and Trade Show Solicitation (where attendees pitch their own services to exhibitors and other attendees).

Focusing on how event planners can add value to incentive travel, this workshop explored understanding clients' motives/objectives; design; destination/venue choice; communication/awareness; delivery and measurement.
