Incentive Travel: Spotlight on Kleinburg, Ontario

From time to time, I have been profiling picturesque towns that are within easy driving distance of Toronto. These hidden gems are known to Greater Toronto Area (GTA) residents but may go unnoticed by visitors to the area. Today, we'll shine a spotlight on Kleinburg.

Kleinburg, OntarioKleinburg is located northwest of Toronto, where Highway 7 and Islington Avenue meet. It is a historical town with roots in the 17th century. Today, although Kleinburg is part of the City of Vaughan, it retains the feeling of a small village.

Kleinburg is the perfect spot to get a break from the city. The Kleinburg Business improvement Association website is a guide to the businesses in the area. Kleinburg has boutiques, antique shops where groups can browse for treasures, cozy eateries, ice cream and gelato shops, art galleries and historical buildings.

One of the charming features of Kleinburg is that the original buildings that are still standing have markers indicating when they were built and the name and occupation of the head of each family. Here is a photo tour of Kleinburg's history.

Binder Twine Festival

Every September, on the first Saturday after Labor Day, people from all over the GTA head to Kleinburg for the annual Binder Twine Festival. This annual festival celebrates Kleinburg's agricultural heritage. The tradition dates back to the 19th century when local farmers would come together to purchase the twine they required to bind sheaves of wheat. The Binder Twine festival, which started in in 1967, features art crafts, agricultural contests (e.g. hog calling, milking a cow) and a quilt raffle. There is a farmer's market, entertainment and the crowning of the Binder Twine Queen. It's a great way for GTA residents and visitors to enjoy the outdoors before the cool weather returns.
