Don't Let Bugs Bug Your Guests at Outdoor Events

Outdoor eventOutdoor corporate events, team building and galas can be a lot of fun, as long as mosquitos and black flies don't show up to spoil the party. Fortunately, there are a number of steps that event planners can take to protect their guests.

  • Clear the area of standing water, scraps of food and any debris that might attract insects.
  • Hire a professional to treat the area through cold fogging at least 6 hours before your event.
  • Suggest that guests wear light colors, long sleeves (a light shawl for ladies), lightweight pants, socks or stockings.
  • Suggest that guests treat their clothing with permithrin-based product .
  • Spray a permithrin-based repellent on tents like Permanone or Ultrathon by 3M.
  • Use rosemary, catnip and marigolds as part of your decor.
These plants have been proven to repel mosquitos.
  • Light citronella torches before guests arrive.
  • For outdoor venues that have access to electricity, use fans and set them to "high."
  • Place citronella candles every 3 - 4 feet and burn them throughout the event.
  • Burn eco-friendly mosquito coils like those manufactured by Tulsi.
  • Provide non-toxic mosquito repellents that are free of DEET for guests (e.g. Tulsi Herbal Insect Repellents Aerosol).
David Suzuki, a Canadian broadcaster, environmental activist and host of ZAPPED, the Buzz About Mosquitos, recommends using white vinegar as a repellent or a herbal insect repellent.
  • Use mosquito nets for event tents and overnight camping.
  • Use an app that sends out an ultra-sonic signal to repel mosquitos.
  • Clear plates and remove food platters quickly.
Don't leave them lying around to attract insects.
  • Dispose of food scraps and garbage quickly and store it in air tight containers.
Don't leave them lying around to attract insects.
