Canadian Destinations: Ottawa - The National Capital

Ottawa, Ontario, CanadaOttawa has much to offer for corporate groups throughout the year. Ottawa was designated Canada's National Capital when the BNA Act was passed by the British Parliament on July 1, 1867. This Act united Nova Scotia, New Brunswick and the Province of Canada  to form the Dominion of Canada.  (It also divided The Province of Canada into Ontario and Quebec.) Together, Ottawa and Gatineau (on the Quebec side of the Ottawa River) are known as Canada's Capital Region.

Ottawa is a bright, clean and modern city with tree-lined streets and heritage venues including the Bytown Museum in a building constructed in 1827 and Rideau Hall, the official residence of the Governor General, dating back to 1838.

Parliament was built in 1865. Only the northwest tower and the library survived the fire of 1916. The central core was re-constructed by 1922 and the iconic Peace Tower was added in 1927. Free guided tours can be arranged for groups of 10 -50. When visiting Parliament Hill during, Changing the Guard at 10 AM daily is not to be missed. (Groups should arrive no later than 9:45 AM.)

Through the magic of 3D projection mapping, a spectacular sound and light show projected onto the Parliament Building takes place nightly during the summer.

Other major attractions in Ottawa include the National Arts Centre, Byward Market, the shopping district that includes an historic farmer's market, the National Gallery of Canada, the Canadian War Museum, and the Canadian Aviation and Space Museum. Many of these venues have space for private events. Ottawa Convention Center, which opened in 2011,  will be of special interest to event planners.

The most colorful times to visit Ottawa are  during the tulip festival and on  Victoria Day in May, on Canada Day (July 1), during the summer when groups can enjoy dinner cruises on the Rideau Canal, when Christmas lights cast a glow across the city in November and December, during the Winterlude Festival, and in the winter when there is ice skating on the Rideau Canal.
