With an elegant but laid-back vibe, Port Antonio has been a personal favorite since childhood when my family would visit my great-uncle and his family there. It's also been a personal pick of royalty and the rich and famous in Jamaica, including Grace Kelly and Prince Rainier, Randolph Hearst, Elizabeth Taylor, Ginger Rogers, Bette Davis, Tom Cruise and Beyonce.
Heritage Sites and Other Attractions
Groups will discover heritage sites like Portland Parish Church dating back to the 1800s, like Folly Point Lighthouse built in 1881, DeMontevin Lodge, a Victorian mansion with Georgian accents where Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II and the Queen mother have been guests, and Trident Castle, built by a German Baroness in the 1980s, is available for private events.
Corporate groups will be pleased with the unique activities Port Antionio offers. Rafting on the Rio Grande, popular since Errol Flynn, who lived on Navy Island for years, added a seat to the rafts used for transporting bananas. A raft building team competition guided by raft captains gives back to the local community.
At Boston Beach, sample jerk pork and chicken at the location from where they spread to the world. A jerk cooking competition, a stlye of cooking invented by the Taino (Jamaica's original inhabitants), are perfect for team building.
Teams can have fun and take away valuable business lessons from Jamaican style Apprentice inspired team building as they help vendors in Port Antonio Market improve their merchandising, displays and marketing.
Stay at GeeJam and compete in teams to make your own CD or DVD at the in-house recording studio.
The Blue Mountains provide a stunning backdrop to Port Antonio. Groups can access coffee plantation tours, hiking, and mountain biking. In a future Cvent Event Blog post, I'll describe Maroon historical sites and settlements groups can explore off the beaten track from Port Antonio.
Beaches and Waterfalls
Blue Lagoon (formerly Blue Hole), where scenes for Blue Lagoon starring Brooke Shields were filmed, is closed to the public but you can take in the beauty via boat.
When groups are ready to relax, secluded beaches, unspoiled by the runaway development that has plagued many world destinations worldwide, are waiting for you. Boston Beach (pictured), Somerset Falls, Reach Falls, Frenchman's Cove, San San Beach, and Long Point...just take your pick.
