Last week, when we identified 4 Affordable Spring Destinations in Europe, Riga, Latvia scored high on rankings of destinations where event planners can get more bang for their incentive travel and event planning budgets. According to the Daily 3-Star Traveler Index, with a stay at a 3 star hotel, the equivalent of US$58.17 will be sufficient to cover expenses in Riga.
Luxury hotels are also affordable with standard rooms at the Grand Palace Riga, Hotel Bergs and the Dome Hotel & Spa recently going for under US$225 per night including breakfast. For large events, the World Trade Centre Riga and the Conference and Events Centre at Radisson Blu Hotel Latvija near the Old Town is available.
Located in Europe's Baltic Region, Latvia was part of the Soviet block until 1991. Riga is a seaport town situated where the Daugava River flows into the Gulf of Riga. The city dates back to 1201. Narrow cobblestone streets, medieval buildings and monuments dating back to the 13th century in Old Riga have earned the city center the designation of UNESCO World Heritage Site.
Latvia is placing a renewed emphasis on eco tourism. For example, the Kemeri Marsh, which is 50 KM from Riga, has nature trails to explore. Gauja National Park, set in the ancient Gauja valley 1-1/2 hours from Riga, is a protected area where visitors can enjoy recreational activities in a natural environment.
In the spring, during downtime, corporate groups can enjoy horse riding, parachuting, orienteering and geocaching. Some of Riga's unique attractions include a number of Latvian adventure parks, the Aerodium, which simulates flying with vertical wind tunnels and special suits and the high ropes park in Jaunmarupe.
Affordable attractions include Riga Motor Museum and the National History Museum of Latvia.
