Visitor's Center & Factory Tour
In Kuala Lumpur, the experience starts with a tour of the Visitor's Centre. The interactive, multi-sensory exhibits provide groups with an opportunity to discover the history and art of crafting pewter and tin pieces. Guests will view the world's largest pewter tankard, as recognized by the Guinness Book of World Records. They will also see a detailed, two-story replica of the Petronas Twin Towers fashioned from 7,062 pewter tankards.
Next, the factory tour gives visitors an up close view of the Royal Selangor artisans at work. Pewter is a soft metal that can be molded into a variety of shapes and forms.
The School of Hard Knocks
The School of Hard Knocks is a hands-on workshop that introduces corporate teams to the fine art of pewtersmithing. It's a unique experience that gives visitors insight into the intricate process.
The process begins with participants carving their initials into pewter disks. In about an hour, Royal Selangor artisans guide the group through the process of pounding the metal disks and fashioning handcrafted pewter bowls in the traditional way with hammer, mallet, wooden mold and scraper.
It's an exhilarating experience that appeals to all the senses. Some participants have even commented on the sense of relief they have felt after pounding out any frustrations they have on the metal disks.
After the workshop, guests can tour the Royal Selangor store in an experience that has been dubbed "retail therapy." In Kuala Lumpur, they can relax over tea, coffee, sandwiches and dessert in the cafe.
Participants take home their "apprentice pewtersmith" apron, a personalized certificate and any treasures that they've picked up from the Royal Selangor retail outlet.
The next time you plan business meetings or corporate retreats in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia or Singapore, consider a visit to the School of Hard Knocks for your itinerary. It's a unique workshop that few groups will be able to experience elsewhere.
