Soccer fever is sweeping the Eurozone and spreading around the globe. There are many opportunities to harness this enthusiasm for corporate events. The great news is that soccer events can be scaled to fit any budget.
1. Pop-up Soccer Viewing Lounges
This photo was taken two days ago in the food court at Toronto's Royal Bank Plaza. (TSN had set up a Eurozone Soccer viewing lounge.) Within 20 minutes of snapping this shot, at the end of the business day, it was standing room only and a lot of excitement around the three monitors.
The next time there is an important soccer game or tournament, surprise your team with a pop up soccer viewing lounge. It doesn't take much space, just a few TVs. Bring in pizza or have everyone brown bag it. Regulations vary from jurisdiction to jurisdiction and sport to sport. Be sure to contact the marketing or events department for your local broadcaster to determine if a permit is required. In some areas, you don't need a permit if you aren't charging admission. In others, you do. Some broadcasters will, for a fee, set up a viewing lounge with their branding and yours.
2. Soccer in the Park, or on the Beach
Soccer does not require a lot of equipment. This shot was taken during a team-building retreat in the desert that my company facilitated in Dubai for one of our corporate clients. All it took was a ball and four cones to mark the goals. We have also done soccer challenges in the mountains in Oman and on beaches in the Caribbean and Asia.
You can organize a pick-up soccer on green space at your company. In many communities, soccer fields are empty during business hours, even during the summer. Contact your local parks and recreation department to find out the cost of renting a field for a few hours for a pick-up game, short round robin tournament, shoot-out challenges, and a picnic.
4. Book a Soccer Center or Soccer Dome
Some soccer centers have that been set up specifically for events have function space for business meetings. For example, the Cvent Supplier Network includes Saskatoon Soccer Centre, Miliken Mills Community Centre in Markham Ontario (with its own soccer dome), Perth Soccer Club, Aztec Indoor Soccer (Texas), Big League Dreams (California) Powerleague-Trafford Soccerdome (UK), and Powerleague-Blackburn Soccerdome (UK).
5. Corporate Events at Professional Soccer Fields
6. Premium Suites, Executive Suites or Club Seats
An afternoon or evening of world-class soccer would be a guaranteed crowd-pleaser, if your company has a lot of soccer fans.
7. Soccer Challenges at Resort Soccer Fields
You never know where there is a hidden soccer field. When my company has had team-building retreats at resorts in Oman, Jamaica and Dubai, we've been surprised to find soccer fields as well as soccer nets on the beach.
8. Player Appearances at Corporate Events
A few years ago, at Kuala Lumpur International Airport. I heard a lot of screaming. Women had surrounded a Manchester United player and he was signing autographs. Surprise appearances by professional players are guaranteed to thrill just about any crowd.
9. Make it Brazil for 2014
If you've ever considered Brazil for incentive travel, what better way to please the soccer enthusiasts on your team than with a soccer themed trip in conjunction with the 2014 FIFA World Cup in Brazil?
10. Take Your Team to France in 2016
The 2016 UEFA European Football Championship will be hosted by France. Participation will be expanded from 16 teams to 24. This is bound to generate even more excitement.
