It’s hard to believe that April is just around the corner, bringing both spring showers and the start of Environmental Awareness Month! In continuous pursuit of ways to contribute to a greener earth, hotel chains around the world will be dimming their lights on Saturday, March 27, at 8:30 pm in recognition of the World Wildlife Fund’s "Earth Hour," a yearly initiative intended to raise awareness of the ongoing climate change issue.
This year, Marriott’s goal is to have a minimum of 500 hotels participating by turning off or dimming all non-essential hotel lighting. Some hotels are even taking the celebration a step further: The Doha Marriott, for example, a 5-star business hotel on the Arabian Gulf, is hosting an Earth Hour Candlelight Gourmet dinner.
Hyatt and Hilton hotels are also in observance of this important green event. The Hyatt Regency Calgary is celebrating all week long; they’ve even developed a menu in their restaurant, Thomson’s, that features organic ingredients grown locally. Various Hiltons around the world are giving guests the chance to support the cause by turning off their lights in their guest rooms.
Keep this special day in mind when planning spring meetings for 2011 and beyond. I would consider it the perfect way to get your attendees involved in a meaningful green activity at the beginning or end of a meeting week!
