I was talking to some colleagues recently about Charleston as a meeting destination. I think it's a great city. It has wonderfully historic buildings, terrific local restaurants and lots of southern charm. And, let's not forget, awesome food!
Tourists adore it and the city generally gets high marks year around in travel magazines as a top spot to visit. For an event - wedding, gala, music, etc - it has a plethora of venue options and more catering choices than you can shake a stick at.
While Charleston may lack space and flexibility when it comes to larger meetings, it makes a flexible home for smaller events, board retreats and small meetings, especially if those are held downtown in the historic district. Once the meeting is done for the day, attendees will enjoy playing tourist, seeing Rainbow Row, walking along The Battery or enjoying the French Quarter.
Charleston has two decent-sized hotels downtown, the Marriott Charleston, with about 340 rooms and over 20,000 square feet of space, and the Charleston Place Hotel, about 400 rooms and 40,000 square feet of space. As far a booking a meeting, it would appear that using just one of these hotels that the biggest block would be about 250 rooms.
