It's been said that we can never have too much education. I suppose this could be true not only in our lives, but in our professions. Here is a profile of Deborah Breiter, an educator with passion.
Name: Deborah Breiter
Years in the Industry: 13
Years as an Educator: 24
Name of Institution: University of Central Florida, Rosen College of Hospitality Management
Program/Educational Focus: Bachelor of Science in Event Management
How Long the Program has been around: 2006
Number of Students in Program: 1200
Favorite subject you teach and why: Convention Sales. Love to talk about the different markets (especially corporate and association) and differences within the markets. Fascinated by the world of third parties like Experient, HelmsBriscoe, Conference Direct. Students are really surprised about how difficult it can be to negotiate contracts and all their clauses.
What do you see challenging students now and in the coming years? How can they best prepare? Navigating the waters of the event industry can be very challenging. Regardless of which side they are on (planner or supplier), they will have to be very flexible and willing to work long hours. The reality may not be as glamorous as they think. But the rewards of an event well done are priceless! The best preparation is an internship or other type of experiential learning prior to graduation.
