New in Newport, RI

Newport, RIIt's a quaint, classic New England town, but Newport, on the Rhode Island coast, has lots to be proud of, including awards and changes.

The only hotel on Cliff Walk, The Chanler, was recently ranked by readers of Conde Nast Traveler as one of the best hotels in the world and was included in the magazine's 16th Annual Gold List, chosen by more than 25,000 readers. Only four hotels in the U.S. scored higher in the location category. In 2009, The Chanler ranked #4 of Small Hotels in the U.S.

Speaking of awards, of the 473 properties worldwide, the Howard Johnson Inn of Middletown, RI  took first place and was recognized with the Overall Guest Satisfaction Award  in a competition not long ago. In the past, the Inn has also won the Property of the Year Award in the Inns/Express Inns category of Howard Johnson. The annual competitions include locations in 18 countries.

The State of Rhode Island is also still shining from its "International Star Diamond Award," which has never been given to a U.S. state before. The award is for highest achievement in the tourism and hospitality industry. It is bestowed upon by the American Academy of Hospitality Sciences.

Change has come to the Newport Marriott Hotel in the form of a multi-million dollar renovation. All of the furniture, fixtures, furnishings, and nuances feature contemporary nautical design elements that depict the surroundings of this city by the sea. Nearly 24,800 square feet of meeting space also got a face lift.
