With few bugs to bite us and a sky that glows 24/7, getting out into our urban version of nature makes the season bright. Making it brighter still is the city's profusion of outdoor summer film series, many of which are free. With crowd pleasing films and fantastic outdoor locations, they can make an interesting alternative to the usual client entertaining activity, that's particularly good for small, informal groups of out-of-towners who wish to spend an evening like "a real New Yorker." 

Where to start? Build your evening with a stop in to Laytner’s Linens, Gracious Home or Bed Bath & Beyond for picnic necessities like chairs and blankets. From there, grab a selection of prepared foods, pick your spot and stake your claim. Whether your picnic is from Dean & Deluca or the corner deli, your client is in for an evening of low-key chillaxin’ just like a local.

4th Annual Intrepid Free Summer Movie Series
May 25 – August 17
Park yourself on the deck of the Intrepid special event venue with your lawn chairs, picnic baskets and blankets, and enjoy the view while you take in such modern classics as Top Gun, Spiderman, Star Trek, The Muppets, Jurassic Park and Goonies.
Summer on the Hudson: Movies Under the Stars
July 11 – August 15, at Pier 1 at 70th Street
Every Wednesday at dusk, settle in for a night of great, free movies, starting with Cinema Paradiso. The events are free, seating is limited, unreserved, and available on a first-come, first-served basis. 
River Flicks
July 11 – August 22, at Pier 63, between 22nd & 24th Street
Arrive early, find a spot on the lawn, bring a picnic, and enjoy the summer-long lineup of big name movies, including MoneyBall, Super 8, Bridesmaids, Limitless, Cowboys & Aliens, Crazy Stupid Love and Horrible Bosses
10th Annual Central Park Conservancy Film Festival 
August 21 – 25, at Sheep’s Meadow in Central Park
Five evenings of cult classic films – free of charge, rain or shine – and close captioned. Films include: Do The Right Thing, Pee-wee’s Big Adventure, The Big Lebowski and Animal House.
