Hotels are coming up with creative “coffee breaks” as a great selling tool for their properties. Many like to involve their attendees as much as possible. “At Caesars Entertainment, properties have had success with bringing the kitchen into the function room. Team building is taken to new heights as the attendees participate in different parts of the meal process–from the salad course to desserts,” says Michele Polci, Director of Citywide Catering Sales, Caesars, Las Vegas. Attendees can also participate in their breakfast at The Surf & Sand Resort in Laguna Beach, California. Their “Make Your Own Pancakes” activity station provides hot flapjacks off the griddle for each guest to sprinkle, dollop or drizzle with a variety of sweet and savory toppings.
At the Radisson Blu Aqua Hotel in Chicago, the hotel offers the “Color Break.” The “Green Break” offers green apples, green grapes, a vegetable display with green peppers celery and spinach dip, green gummy bears, chocolate mint, pistachio macaroons, sparkling water and green tea (pictured). The Royal Palms Resort & Spa in Phoenix, Arizona offers a lemonade stand, a refreshing break with fresh squeezed lemonade, lemon cupcakes with vanilla frosting and miniature lemon tarts. The Vedema resort on Santorini on the Aegean Sea has a traditional Greek coffee break and energy shots. Greek coffee prepared the traditional way, in a small copper pot warmed on heated sand (the hovoli). Greek coffee is served with a local specialty, sweet Santorinian soft goat’s milk cheese tartlets known as melitinia, plus spoon sweets and the fragrant, velvety loukoumi (similar to Turkish delight).
The Capella Pedregal in Cabo San Lucas, Mexico has morning street vendors serving up local fare including Mexican hot chocolate, champurado, a warm guava flavored beverage and homemade Mexican candies. The Omni Royal Orleans is a great spot for groups that want to experience the home of Mardi Gras. The hotel serves up classic café au laits, beignets and pralines. At The Brazilian Court Hotel and Cafe Boulud the onsite restaurant of renowned Chef Daniel Boulud’s the “Boulud Breaks” are gourmet versions of the traditional coffee breaks. “A Date with Sweetness” – Stuffed Dates and Apricots with Marzipan, Coconut Macaroons, Rosewater Turkish Delight, Honey, Ginger and Lemon Pound Cake and Artisinal coffee and tea.

The “Sheraton Meets Sesame” coffee break includes Elmo and Cookie Monster cupcakes, peanut butter and jelly squares, cotton candy, Big Bird lemon bars and Sesame fruit kabobs. The break area is decorated with Sesame Street-themed items and attendees can even “be a kid again” and watch an episode of the beloved children’s show. At Hyatt Regency Atlanta, it’s beer instead of coffee with their new “Beer Breaks,” including the brewing process and beer pairings, what beer goes best with which foods.
