One of the most satisfying aspect being an international event planner is the opportunity to discover truly incredible places in all over the world. Oman is a stunning destination but it can be an expensive. One way for event and meeting planners to stretch an event budget is to arrange for groups to spend a few days in Nizwa. Area hotels are affordable and there are many attractions in and near Nizwa for engaging corporate events. Nizwa, an oasis town in Oman's Hajar Mountains, is one of those places that casts its spell and stays with groups long after they've returned home.
Nizwa is about a 1-1/2 hour drive from Muscat's Seeb International Airport. During the 6th and 7th centuries, it was the capital of Oman. As you approach Nizwa, you will pass several roundabouts including the famous book and Khanjar roundabouts.
Nizwa is the location of So'al Mosque. One of Oman's oldest mosques, it was built in the 2nd century.
The 17th-century Nizwa Fort is in Nizwa was build by Imam Sultan bin Saif al Ya'arubi.
The largest fort on the Arabian Peninsula, Nizwa Fort has ancient artifacts, treasure chests and a display of traditional clothing. Guides provide great insight into the history of the fort and the lifestyle of those who took refuge there.
The ancient, walled Nizwa Souq is filled with crafts, pottery, silver artifacts and other local treasures. You can pick up incense burners, spices and miniatures of tea sets, coffee pots and oil lamps.
Nizwa Souq comes to life every Friday. That's the day when the whole town comes out to take in the excitement and color of the weekly cattle auction.
Nizwa is enchanting in other ways. Historically, Nizwa had a reputation as a center of magic. You'll hear tales of djinns, sorcerers and magic books.
In Nizwa visitors can see Falaj Daris that feeds the intricate network that waters the town's vegetation, lush gardens and parks. (Falajes are ancient irrigation systems unique to the Arabian Peninsula.)
Near Nizwa, you can visit the Waterfalls of Tanuf, a unique attraction in an area that is mountainous and rugged.
Corporate Team Events in Nizwa
There is no shortage of activities for corporate team events in Nizwa. Groups can take part in treasure hunts, GPS and shopping challenges in the souq.
Oman is a popular destination for caving, rock climbing and abseiling enthusiasts. Drive about 1-1/2 hours further up into the mountains, for abseiling on the imposing Jebel Akhdar mountains. On Jebel Akhdar's southern slope, there is access to the Al Hoota Caves, one of the largest caves in the world. The Al Hoota Caves are the entrance to one of the world's major subterranean wadis.
Hotels in Nizwa
Al-Diyar is Nizwa's newest hotel. The Conference Hall accommodates up to 100 participants. The Wedding Hall is another one of the hotel's event venues. The hotel has a large swimming pool and a gymnasium is scheduled to open soon.
The Golden Tulip Hotel has 120 guest rooms and 2 state-of-the-art venues for business meetings; Al Jabal Al Akhdar with a capacity of 400 and Al Shams that can accommodate up to 60 people. There is a restaurant, a private bar and open-air Sunset Point with space for 1,000 guests.
The 55 room Falaj Daris Hotel is ideal for small corporate groups. It has a small meeting room and a large dining room. The staff is very flexible and accommodating.
