Sofia, Bulgaria recently topped the list of destinations in Europe well worth exploring for event planners seeking ways to stretch their budgets. Sofia is the capital of Bulgaria and the country's largest city.
The value of the Bulgarian Lev has been declining from about 0.80 cents in 2009 to 0.67 cents today. Transfers from the airport to the city center are US$6.65 to US$8.00. According to the Price of Travel's 3-star Traveler Index, accommodation, transportation, food and attractions can come in at under $50 a day. Even if groups opt for 5 star accommodation it won't blow the budget. For example, our recent price check revealed standard rooms at Kempinski Hotel Zografski Sofia for just under US$100 a night and, at the Grand Hotel Sofia, a superior room was US$130.
Many of Sofia's most popular attractions are free. For example, entrance to the mineral hot springs is free. The price of admission for the National Museum of History is equivalent to US$6.65 and St. Alexander Nevsky Cathedral Museum is about US$4. Arts lovers will find that Sofia Art Gallery, National Art Gallery, Archaeological Museum, Ivan Vazov National Theatre, and the National Opera House are a comfortable walk from central hotels.
Situated along a historical trade route between Europe and the Middle East, this city, which dates back thousands of years, was part of the Greek, Roman, Ottoman, and Soviet Empires. It was completely destroyed by the Hun in 447 AD and re-built.
Sofia's history is reflected in its architecture with Late Roman, Byzantine and Soviet influences. A number of buildings date back to the Middle Ages including Boyana Church, a UNESCO World Heritage site. There are remnants of the 19th-century Rotunda of St. George, Serdica fortress, and Serdica Amphitheatre. The free Sofia Walking Tour is the best way for groups to explore these attractions.
